This seven-story mixed-use concrete building in San Diego won the 2018 Excellence in Structural Engineering Award for “New Construction” from the Structural Engineering Association of San Diego (SEAOSD). This project accomplished a high-density residential solution in the Hillcrest neighborhood by accommodating 36 market-rate and affordable housing units, at-grade commercial space, and a below-grade parking level (54 stalls). Since the architect (Jonathan Segal) was also the developer, the 42,923-sf project was completed in 14 months.
The completion of Mr. Robinson was more than just opening a standard mixed-use building. SEAOSD judges recognized its innovation of design: providing flexible tenant spaces; elegant, spacious interiors with exposed structural concrete; and intentional geometry and orientation to bring in abundant natural light. When the judges paused and asked: “How did they do that?” – DCI’s Associate Principal Jon Deck presented project insight for inquiring minds during the SEAOSD awards ceremony.
