The best part of being a Structural Designer for me is that it is the other side of the table from my days building custom homes. It has been an awesome experience to now produce the drawings that at one time I would have just received in their finished state.”
Before he started modeling buildings, John was building them. He started his career building custom homes in Washington’s San Juan Islands, hauling materials and crew members to sites with barges and crew boats. During this time, he developed an appreciation for his projects’ “skeletons” and the part of the building people don’t see and take for granted. Then in 2008, John was diagnosed with cancer, upending his building career. After his treatment, John wanted to find a job that would be easier on him. So, he went back to school, and since CAD and drafting had always been of interest to him, he invested his time in a structural engineering degree with the intention of designing custom homes. After he graduated, an opportunity arose to work for DCI, and he jumped on, saying “it has been a very rewarding experience” where he’s gotten to continue his education through teamwork, and learn about different type of construction for large-scale developments.
