120 Clay | Skylight

One of the most energy efficient and low carbon emissive buildings in Portland.”

Room to Grow: 120 Clay’s open floor space attracts high-tech office tenant

Portland’s Central Eastside features an intriguing commercial office facility that appears to be two separate buildings, but is designed as one. 120 Clay has a centrally located lobby flanked with a two-story office section and a three-story office section. The east building section has noticeable full height glass facades revealing the interior timber framed office space. The west wing is a three-level structure with standard size window punch outs in the brick facades. 120 Clay’s flexible, expansive floor layouts are conducive to the high-tech tenant’s business strategy to lease more office space when staff capacity grows.

DCI Engineers was the Engineer of Record for this design-build project. The project team designed three primary framing schemes to accomplish the client’s vision of a modern workspace with the two-building-sections-in-one-structure look. 120 Clay comprises of steel and wood columns and beams; floor systems of concrete over nail laminated timber (NLT) or concrete over metal deck; and wood trusses with steel tension rods. The building also includes two lateral systems: concrete core walls and special concentric braced frames.
