Great, Green Design: Mass Timber makes Bellingham Public Schools’ new Administration Building energy and time efficient

Bellingham Public School's new Administration Building meets Washington Sustainable Schools Protocol and Fitwel Standards. The new administration building utilizes the project site’s narrow footprint for improved floor plan efficiency, with fewer steps needed to get around the building than the old, larger Administration Building it replaced. The mass timber structure DCI designed for the building reduced construction time, project costs and energy use in the short and long-term.

The new Administration Building has a diverse array of office spaces, including private focus rooms and communal meeting spaces. There is also a professional learning center, family engagement center and an early childhood center which features two classrooms for younger children and facilitates childcare during the school year. Parents, staff and guests visiting the building are greeted in its spacious lobby by a children’s art gallery and a coffee shop. For those who bike in, there are bike storage rooms inside the building which have chargers for electric bikes.
