With a large increase in freshmen enrollment, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo expanded its on-campus housing through a 12-acre community area, featuring seven residential buildings with a capacity of 1,475 beds; a four-level parking garage; and several satellite activities/commons buildings.
Named the yakʔitʸutʸu complex, which translates to “our community” in Northern Chumash, the project was created in partnership with the nearby Northern Chumash tribe. Project design and even program outreach were inspired by the tribe’s culture.
