DCI’s Mid-Atlantic offices have been the go-to structural engineering firm for the prestigious horse racing and gaming group Churchill Downs Incorporated. Projects we’ve worked on include their new Oak Grove racing and gaming facility in Oak Grove, Kentucky, and Turfway Park in Florence, Kentucky. These projects were both well over 100,000-sf and involved providing structural engineering services for multiple buildings, both original and pre-engineered. DCI’s work has helped the owners, architects, and contractors finish their work on time and on budget.
Some locations have unique amenities, such as a band shell and a 3,000-seat outdoor amphitheater at the Oak grove Campus, and other projects go all in on the gaming amenities, like at Turfway Park, where there are nearly 1,000 historic racing machines and a second-story elevated race-judge’s booth.
Because the casino industry needs gaming facilities to be open for immediate business, all of Churchill Downs’ projects have relatively fast turnaround times. DCI coordinates across our offices to verify structural documents can be delivered early and if problems arise during construction, like when there was shortage of steel joists during construction of Turfway park, DCI works with the contractors to find solutions, such as built-up steel trusses to replace the joists in the buildings’ lateral systems.
