César E. Chávez Campus Garage: Welcoming an emerging Barrio Logan

4.5 levels of parking structure accommodate the growing influx of students, faculty and community visitors to the new state-of-the-art César E. Chávez Continuing Education Campus. 10 years in the making, the new school in San Diego’s historic Barrio Logan neighborhood consolidates the programs of Centre City and the initial César E. Chávez colleges. The 110,000-sf parking structure met the client’s design intent for a safe and appealing, open format facility which alleviates the area’s shrinking parking situation.

DCI contributed to the building criteria by improving overall sight lines for security purposes. To gain a sense of building transparency, the team engineered a column-free floor layout with long span beam systems; installed concrete moment lateral frame systems with upturned perimeter beams to maximize interior space without adding interior shear walls; and outfitted the corner stairwells with cantilevered stair landings hanging from primary slabs to accomplish an open environment.

Project Highlights

  • The parking levels are designed to handle live loads of 40 psf with an additional 5 psf of dead load.
  • 320-stall parking structure with long span beam systems achieved a space efficient column-free layout and secure line of sight.
  • The building’s pre-cast stairwells contain cantilevered stair landings to meet the design criteria of transparency and openness.
  • Photomurals of civil rights activist César E. Chávez and his impact on the local community adorn the facades of the building. DCI designed the attachment details for these architectural elements.
  • Calculated the loads and determined best locations to support 4,000-sf of rooftop solar panels without creating additional structural attachments.
