Making Everything Count: Cost-effective designs for schools
DCI Engineers’ ability to keep cost and efficiency at the forefront of structural design was key to the success of the Hamlin Robinson School, a private institution for children with dyslexia and other language-based learning difficulties.
The state of the art facility has 21 classrooms, a two-story library, art and music rooms, a gym and technology lab, providing a permanent home for an institution that had been leasing space for most of its 30 years of existence.
The floors were constructed with composite steel beams with a concrete over metal deck slab. The roof was metal deck over open web steel joists. Special steel-braced frames provided lateral support.
The school’s design is carried by the library space, which features two stories of large windows, maximizing natural light.
DCI accommodated the project’s tight budget and constrained construction schedule with a simple and efficient column layout that maximized interior space and minimized material costs.
