The original building for Milwaukee El Puente Elementary School was constructed in 1917. Recent renovation and expansion efforts refreshed the classroom interiors, relocated the main entry (ADA compliant) vestibule (to improve security), added new conference and group meeting rooms, new corridors to a previously detached kindergarten classroom, transitional learning area, a new gym, media center, 18 additional parking spaces, stormwater facilities, and rebuilt the trash enclosure and covered play area (5,600-sf).
DCI Engineers was the structural and civil engineer of record for the school’s renovation. For structural, the engineering team detailed the foundation, stud & shear wall plan and roofing to accommodate support for new corridors around the play area, a new fire separation wall, new gym entry, remodeled front office, and new conference and health areas.
For the civil side, the engineers coordinated the site demolition, grading, stormwater quality upgrades and additions, temporary utilities to support portable classrooms, erosion and sediment control, and a new dedicated fire water connection for the existing building.
