Multicare Covington Medical Center Expansion

We are so excited to serve our community with this project.”

Coordinating a Two-Phase Expansion Project: Supporting a growing community’s medical needs

Through two project phases, the MultiCare Covington Medical Center includes a new 24,000-sf emergency department and 120,000-sf additional medical office building (MOB) space to serve the residents of Covington, Black Diamond, and Maple Valley. The expansion added 58 patient beds, surgical suites (both pre- and post-operating rooms), 10 beds for family-centered care, private rooms with in-suite bathtubs, in-patient pharmacy, lab, and utility area.

DCI was the engineer of record for modifying the MOB and designing structural systems for the new north and south additions. Engineering solutions involved relocating seismic bracing; strengthening the existing roof and ceilings; designing composite concrete on metal deck floor systems, special reinforced shear walls, and special steel moment frames.

Project Highlights

  • New emergency department and expansion makes MultiCare Covington the most comprehensive multi-specialty clinic in South King County, according to MultiCare staff.
  • The north and south additions are seismically separate from the original building.
  • Because of the site’s high-water table, the new foundations were designed to minimize dewatering needs.
  • The north building contains a two-story atrium feature.
